What are hemroids? Few questions?
What causes them? How are they treated? And can you get them by somebody else in any way?
The proper spelling for hemroids is either “haemorrhoids” if you’re using British English or “hemorrhoids” if you’re using American English.
What Are Hemorrhoids:
Hemorrhoids (also known as piles) refers to the condition whereby anal and lower rectal veins become swollen, distended and inflamed.
What Causes Hemorrhoids:
Any number of factors can cause hemroids but they all have one thing in common and that is to exert increased pressure on the ano-rectal veins which ultimately causes them to swell.
Hemroids are similar to varicose veins of the legs except that they occur in the anal region.
Common Causes of Hemorrhoids:
1. Digestive Issues (such as constipation and diarrhea). Straining to pass stool is a major contributor to the formation of hemroids.
Straining may arise because of of a diet deficient in fiber which in turn makes for hard bowel movements. Constipation may also be due to insufficient intake of fluids.
2. Pregnancy
Pregnancy tends to put a lot of pressure on the ano-rectal veins especially during actual childbirth (the pushing during the 2nd stage of labor).
Another way in which pregnancy contributes to hemroids is that the increased levels of progesterone makes the blood vessels relax and thus more susceptible to swelling under pressure.
For the vast majority of women hemroids caused by pregnancy are temporary.
3. Excessive Weight & Inactive Lifestyle
Sitting for prolonged periods of time predispose a person to getting hemorrhoids whether or not they are overweight.
Obesity and overweight have long been regarded as significant causes of hemroids.
4. Lifting Heavy Weights
Lifting heavy objects on a regular basis as well as habitually indulging in strenuous exercises that increase pressure on the ano-rectal veins will also predispose you to hemroids.
5. Hypertension
Hypertension of any form especially that known as portal hypertension which is associated with liver problems may be a contributing factor to hemorrhoids.
Symptoms of Hemorrhoids:
Hemroids can present with signs and symptoms similar to a number of anorectal problems such as fissures and fistulas for example.
Are Hemorrhoids Contagious?
Hemroids are not contagious and are fairly common in both men and women especially over the age of 50
Diagnosis of Hemorrhoids:
To rule out other medical conditions that typically present with similar signs and symptoms of hemroids it is always best to have a complete and thorough evaluation by a medical doctor.
Treatment of Hemorrhoids:
There are several ways to treat hemroids some surgical some not and unfortunately quite often the hemroids return despite either form of treatment.
Some common methods of treating hemroids include:
a) dietary changes
b) using hemorrhoid creams
c) taking what is called a “Sitz bath”
