Internationally acclaimed novelist Amos Oz grew up in war-torn Jerusalem, where as a boy he witnessed firsthand the poisonous consequences of fanaticism. In two concise, powerful essays, the award-winning author offers unique insight into the true nature of fanaticism and proposes a reasoned and respectful approach to resolving the Israeli Palestinian conflict. As an added feature, he comments on contemporary issues–the Gaza pullout, Yasser Arafat`s death, and the war in Iraq–in an extended interview at the end of the book. Oz argues that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a war of religion or cultures or traditions, but rather a real estate dispute–one that will be resolved not by greater understanding, but by painful compromise. As he writes, "The seeds of fanaticism always lie in uncompromising righteousness, the plague of many centuries." The brilliant clarity of these essays, coupled with Oz`s ironic sense of humor in illuminating the serious, breathes new life into this centuries-old debate. Oz argues that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a war of religion or cultures or traditions, but rather a real estate dispute–one that will be resolved not by greater understanding, but by painful compromise. He emphasizes the importance of imagination in learning to define and respect other`s space, and analyzes the twisted historical roots that have led to Middle East violence. In his interview, Oz sends a message to Americans. Why not, he proposes, advocate for a twenty-first-century equivalent of the Marshall Plan aimed at preventing poverty and despair in the region? "What is necessary is to work on the ground, for example, building homes for hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees who have been rotting in camps for almost sixty years now." Fresh, insightful, and inspiring, How to Cure a Fanatic brings a new voice of sanity to the cacophony on Israeli-Palestinian relations–a voice no one can afford to ignore.

The Cure - Concert: Cure Live

The Cure – Concert: Cure Live

$14.12

CONCERT: CURE LIVE features 10 energetic concert recordings taken from the famed pop rockers` 1984 show.Though it is best experienced across the later video/DVD release, the Cure`s first ever live album, from U.K. concerts during the 1984 The Top tour, catches the band in exhilaratingly uncompromising mood. The band`s first full album since their post-Pornography breakup, The Top found Robert Smith still striving to shake off the mantel that had once cloaked the Cure in such blackness — "Shake Dog Shake" and "Give Me It," both from the new album, emerge as highlights here, no matter how desperately you want to hear the older songs that complete the collection. Compared to all that the Cure would become, Concert is often regarded as a dour album. Audiences, too, needed to be reconditioned, and the playful symphonics that would shortly become the band`s stock-in-trade simply wouldn`t have worked at this point. What you get instead, then, is a rough, punk-edged sound, one that reaches absurd proportions on the closing "Killing an Arab," but which jars "Primary," "The Walk," and "A Forest" as well. It`s not a wholly disruptive sensation once you become accustomed to it, but anyone whose vision of the Cure was forged from their studio output or, indeed, the various subsequent live albums should approach Concert with care. The initial U.K. cassette run, incidentally, added a full album`s worth of bonus tracks in the form of the archive-scraping Curiosity. Of invaluable aid and interest to collectors, it is an even rougher portrait of the group than the main attraction, but includes definitive airings of "At Night" and "Funeral Party," plus the otherwise unavailable "Forever." ~ Dave Thompson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Singing Cure

The Singing Cure

$7.98

The Singing Cure Paul Newham The Only Course on Singing for Health – When Sigmund Freud developed his revolutionary model for treating psychological problems, he called it "the talking cure." Freud embraced the ancient Greek concept of catharsis, while ignoring how it was originally practiced: through the expression of extreme vocal sounds, which resembled songs more than words. On The Singing Cure, vocal researcher Paul Newham presents the only professional training course in therapeutic singing. So effective that it has been accredited by England’s Royal Society of the Arts, The Singing Cure presents a complete course in Voice Movement Therapy™ to unmask your natural singing voice and use it as a powerful healing instrument. Utilizing simple exercises adapted from many vocal healing traditions, including indigenous cultures, Newham helps you break down your voice into its key ingredients. Step by step, you use sounds and songs to investigate who you are and how you feel, and to express yourself to the world with confidence and clarity. Now you can learn how your voice can help you tame the "monsters" in your life—anger, grief, shame, and other difficult emotions—and reclaim a beautiful tool for living fully, with The Singing Cure.

Are You Ready to Get Your Life Back–And Be Permanently Free From the Crippling Pain of Migraines? The Migraine Cure is not dependent on exercise, environment or climatic changes to guarantee success. No more guesswork, futility and frustration! The Migraine Cure identifies and delivers exactly what YOU PERSONALLY need in order to be permanently migraine-free. "Never did I imagine I would find a cure for migraine, a debilitating disease which, according to the National Headache Foundation, affects approximately 28 million Americans… But I did. Until now, migraine has appeared to be impossible to cure. But it’s not impossible any more."–from the introduction by Sergey Dzugan, MD, PhD While Dr. Dzugan and Dr. R. Arnold Smith were working with cancer patients at the North Central Mississippi Regional Cancer Center they made a startling discovery… When cancer patients were treated with immunorestoration–a treatment that includes the use of hormones to help boost the immune system–patients who had once suffered with migraines reported that suddenly they were migraine-free. Why were these patients suddenly free of migraine and its many related symptoms, including fatigue, insomnia, depression, and constipation? Could restoration of specific, foundational hormones be the basis of a migraine cure? From this discovery, Dr. Dzugan developed the Migraine Cure treatment protocol out of a long-term clinical study in which all the patients–100 percent–got complete relief from migraine pain and related symptoms, including individuals who had difficult-to-treat migraine that had plagued them for more than thirty years. Since that study, Dr. Dzugan has repeatedly gotten the same results with hundreds of men, women, and adolescents in the United States and from around the world, whether they have been suffering with episodes of migraine pain for a few months or for decades. If they can find relief, you and your loved ones can find it as well. In The Migraine Cure, Dr. Dzugan shares with you some of his patients’ success stories and how they achieved that success. More importantly, he explains how you can realize that success as well. The Migraine Cure treatment program is soundly based in science, it is amazing, and it is effective. It is also natural, readily available, noninvasive, and fine-tuned for each individual to fit his or her unique needs. In The Migraine Cure, you will learn about how the program works, why it works, …

The Invisible Cure

The Invisible Cure

$13.98

A New York Times Notable Book of 2007 The Invisible Cure is an account of Africa’s AIDS epidemic from the inside–a revelatory dispatch from the intersection of village life, government intervention, and international aid. Helen Epstein left her job in the US in 1993 to move to Uganda, where she began work on a test vaccine for HIV. Once there, she met patients, doctors, politicians, and aid workers, and began exploring the problem of AIDS in Africa through the lenses of medicine, politics, economics, and sociology. Amid the catastrophic failure to reverse the epidemic, she discovered a village-based solution that could prove more effective than any network of government intervention and international aid, an intuitive response that calls into question many of the fundamental assumptions about the AIDS in Africa. Written with conviction, knowledge, and insight, The Invisible Cure will change how we think about the worst health crisis of the past century–and indeed about every issue of global public health.

The Anger Cure

The Anger Cure

$9.99

A Step-by-Step Program to Reduce Anger, Rage, Negativity, Violence, and Depression in Your Life If you get angry out of the blue, experience road rage, often blow off steam at your kids, get depressed for no apparent reason, or otherwise act out of control, then you need to read and heed this book. Anger is not just an emotion – it's a way of life based on all the things you eat, think, and do. Specific biological, nutritional, and psychological states feed anger. So if you don't change your lifestyle and cure your problem, you're headed for degenerative diseases that increase with age – things like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, obesity, and addiction. In her book, author Kathleen O'Bannon, C.N.C., uses her accumulated wealth of knowledge about lifestyle-based conditions to provide a series of tests to help you diagnose what's causing your anger problem. She then guides you through a series of lifestyle changes necessary to cure it. For instance, spikes in your blood sugar after you eat a candy bar instead of a nutritious lunch cause anger attacks, as do yeast infections, a lack of B vitamins, and excess stress. Not only does O'Bannon describe the many factors that contribute to and promote anger, she provides diets, exercises, and stress management – a complete Anger Cure program – based on nearly thirty years of lifestyle counseling. Being angry is a choice you make when you allow your body to control you instead of you controlling your body. The goal of The Anger Cure is to help you learn how to become more balanced and anger-free. Are you ready to take control of your life? The choice is yours.

The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards, 6-sting bass); Perry Bamonte (guitar, 6-string bass); Roger O`Donnell (keyboards); Simon Gallup (bass); Jason Cooper (drums, percussion).Recorded at St. Catherine`s Court, Avon, and Rak Studio 3, London, England.BLOODFLOWERS was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. With BLOODFLOWERS, Robert Smith and the boys give sway to the most shoegazery elements of their eternally languid arsenal to often stunning effect. Evoking memories of similar classics such as PORNOGRAPHY and DISINTEGRATION, the Cure`s first effort of the 21st century simmers with serene seamless disorder as Smith lays his usual mixture of lyrical sorrow and delight upon a bed of ambient landscapes. While the terrain is somewhat familiar, the echoing guitars; the lush, alluring keyboards; and the sensually pleading vocals that so unmistakably characterize any Cure album are welcome friends. The air of tranquillity that permeates BLOODFLOWERS is set from the first minutes of the album as "Out of This World" breezes in with a gentle two-minute intro before Robert Smith drops by to ask "will we really remember how it feels to be this alive?" The group proceeds to drift through a quietly enthralling set of nine songs. Smith and company do pick up the pace momentarily on the beautifully buoyant plea of "Maybe Someday," but even that is an ode to reflection. BLOODFLOWERS is a welcome return to the Cure`s ongoing meditation on discontent. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Contracting a Cure

Contracting a Cure

$9.98

In Contracting a Cure, Gianna Pomata tells the hitherto unknown story of a fundamental shift in the relationship between healers and patients in the early modern Europe. Using a wide array of sources — including the rich archives of Bologna’s College of Medicine and legal records from several European countries — Pomata explores the tradition of the "agreement for a cure" whereby the practitioner was contractually bound to heal the sick person within a specified period and for a stipulated sum. If the patient was not cured, he or she had a legal right to reclaim from the practitioner any money advanced for the cure. The author argues that such contracts implied a "horizontal model" of healing that gave considerable power to patients and that, in consequence, was a serious hindrance to the growing power of the medical profession. The book shows how the "agreement for a cure" disappeared by the end of the early modern period precisely because of the determined opposition of physicians and jurists, who realized that payment by results was incompatible with the professionalization of medicine. More than a simple history of professionalization, however, Contracting a Cure recreates the vanished world of meanings that patients and healers gave to their encounters in hte past and recaptures the usually neglected voices of ordinary patients. With Contracting a Cure, Gianna Pomata brings us a compelling account of the erosion of patients’ rights that was a basic precondition for the dominance of doctors that characterizes present-day medicine. In recountingthe history of the "agreement for a cure" she reveals a notion of justice profoundly different from the one that regulates medical practice today. The history of the cure agreement, she concludes, is but a fragment in a wider history of the notions of justice we have lost. "Healers are not the main characters of this book, just as they were not the real protagonists in the judicial records of the Protomedicato. Another presence dominated these court proceedings — a presence that I did not expect to find, at least not so close by: that of the patients. In trial after trial, the sick speak at length in the records of the Protomedicato. They recount their experiences of illness, their attempts to understand it and fight it and, to use their own words, their hopes of being ‘freed’ from it. Clearly and in great detail — with almost legal precision — they describe their involvement with different kinds of practitioners. The figure of the healer is vividly remembered, scrutinized by attentive eyes that carefully noted and weighed every detail of treatment. Above all, each healer is evaluated not only in terms of the effectiveness of treatment but also in terms of a specific — again, I would say quasi-legal — notion of what constitutes a fair transaction between patient and healer." — from the Introduction

The Talking Cure

The Talking Cure

$3.48

In The Talking Cure, critic Jane Shattuc takes a hard look at television talk shows, a TV genre that in many ways is for and about women. Tracing the genre from the four top nationally syndicated shows of the 1980s–Donahue, the The Oprah Winfrey Show, Geraldo and Sally Jessy Raphael–to the rise of the Ricki Lake phenonmenon of the 1990s, Jane Shattuc offers a new take on how talk shows and their audiences interact. Much of talk show culture is grounded, Shattuc argues, in feminist politics, a stand that is not always the aim of the television industry. Analyzing programs as diverse as "Transsexuals: You’re Not the Man I Married" and "Serial Killers: The Sunset Murders," she reveals how television as an institution needs to appeal to women, but also wants to channel female desires: the industry resorts to fears, sensations, and stereotypes so that its viewers will want what TV wants them to want. At their worst, these shows are television at its most exploitative, where socially marginal people are paraded for profit. Yet at their best, these same talk shows provide a rare public forum for working-class women and women of different sexual orientations. In many ways, these talk shows, by popularizing feminist identity politics, represent American TV at its most radical. The Talking Cure looks at how these contradictory impulses work, offering a refreshingly complex view of one of the most controversial faces of popular culture. programming (Oprah garnering 19 million viewers per show). They serve as one of the few public forums where women from the working class and with different sexual orientations have a voice. In many ways, these talk shows represent American TV at its most radical as they popularize feminist identity politics. Without adopting an overly naive view of the benevolence of corporate captialism, Jane Shattuc examines the tension between talk’s feminist politics and the television industry. In their need to appeal to women and channel the female desires, the television institution trades on sensation, stereotypes and fears in order to engender product consumption. However, this genre is not a simple, one way form of social interaction. The female audience complies and resists in a complex give-and-take, and it is this relationship which The Talking Cure aims to understand and reveal.

Copeland's Cure

Copeland’s Cure

Today, one out of every three Americans uses some form of alternative medicine, either along with their conventional ( standard, traditional ) medications or in place of them. One of the most controversial-as well as one of the most popular-alternatives is homeopathy, a wholly Western invention brought to America from Germany in 1827, nearly forty years before the discovery that germs cause disease. Homeopathy is a therapy that uses minute doses of natural substances-minerals, such as mercury or phosphorus; various plants, mushrooms, or bark; and insect, shellfish, and other animal products, such as Oscillococcinum. These remedies mimic the symptoms of the sick person and are said to bring about relief by entering the body’s vital force. Many homeopaths believe that the greater the dilution, the greater the medical benefit, even though often not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the solution. In Copeland’s Cure, Natalie Robins tells the fascinating story of homeopathy in this country; how it came to be accepted because of the gentleness of its approach-Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were outspoken advocates, as were Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Daniel Webster. We find out about the unusual war between alternative and conventional medicine that began in 1847, after the AMA banned homeopaths from membership even though their medical training was identical to that of doctors practicing traditional medicine. We learn how homeopaths were increasingly considered not to be real doctors, and how real doctors risked expulsion from the AMA if they even consulted with a homeopath. At the center of Copeland’s Cure is RoyalSamuel Copeland, the now-forgotten maverick senator from New York who served from 1923 to 1938. Copeland was a student of both conventional and homeopathic medicine, an eye surgeon who became president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, dean of the New York Homeopathic Medical College, and health commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923 (he instituted unique approaches to the deadly flu pandemic). We see how Copeland straddled the worlds of politics (he befriended Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others) and medicine (as senator, he helped get rid of medical diploma mills ). His crowning achievement was to give homeopathy lasting legitimacy by including all its remedies in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. Finally, the author brings the story of clashing medical beliefs into the present, and describes the role of homeopathy today and how some of its practitioners are now adhering to the strictest standards of scientific research-controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical studies.

As alarming stories about new pathogens like the Ebola virus or Mad Cow Disease fill today’s headlines, scientists face a test of their abilities to contain them. But public health officials face a crisis of their own, because even when effective treatments become available, efforts to control disease often fall short. After the Cure was written to improve the prospects for effective management of AIDS and other public health crises. Martin Levin and Mary Bryna Sanger draw on cases of previous large-scale public health initiatives to show how management effectiveness can meet threats to public health.Focusing on AIDS as the most compelling contemporary example of the need for change, the authors advocate a commonsense approach that seeks to minimize the chances of failure. They encourage health officials to exercise strategic skepticism by developing plans that anticipate potential problems — such as scientific controversy over a vaccine’s effectiveness or media sensationalism — which could arise from flaws in program design and implementation.Case studies involving polio, swine flu, childhood immunization, reemergent TB, and the early AIDS experiences demonstrate the variety of managerial problems that can confront such initiatives. By reviewing the lessons of these cases, the authors suggest how their approach can be applied to the management of AIDS and future public health threats. They then present both a critique of the early mismanagement of the AIDS crisis and a scenario for the day after an AIDS vaccine is discovered .Because epidemics are likely to increase, After the Cure clearly demonstrates the importance of anticipating obstacles to their management throughskillful scenario writing. Combining careful analysis with practical advice, it shows that in the public health arena, management matters as much as medicine.

There Is a Cure for Diabetes

$13.56

Diabetes has become a seemingly unstoppable national epidemic, affecting more than twenty million Americans. Conventional wisdom calls it incurable, but renowned Dr. Gabriel Cousens counters that claim with this breakthrough book. There Is a Cure for Diabetes lays out a three-week plan for reversing the negative genetic expression of diabetes to a physiology of health and well-being. Dr. Cousens’s method, widely tested at his famous Tree of Life centers, is to reset the DNA through green juice fasting and a 100 organic, nutrient-dense, vegan, low-glycemic, low-insulin-scoring, and high-mineral diet of living foods in the first twenty-one days. Both practical and inspirational, the book explains how to abandon the widespread “culture of death”–symbolized by addictive junk food–that fosters diabetes in favor of a more natural, nurturing approach. The program renders insulin and related medicines unnecessary within four days as the blood sugar drops to normal levels; and the diabetic shifts into a non-diabetic physiology within two weeks. The third week focuses on live-food preparation, featuring 100 delicious raw recipes. Dr. Cousens emphasizes regular consultations, monitoring blood chemistries, and emotional support, and includes a one-year support program to help maintain a diabetes-free life.

Seeking the Cure

Seeking the Cure

A timely, authoritative, and entertaining history of medicine in America by an eminent physician Despite all that has been written and said about American medicine, narrative accounts of its history are uncommon. Until Ira Rutkow’s Seeking the Cure, there have been no modern works, either for the lay reader or the physician, that convey the extraordinary story of medicine in the United States. Yet for more than three centuries, the flowering of medicine—its triumphal progress from ignorance to science—has proven crucial to Americans’ under-standing of their country and themselves. Seeking the Cure tells the tale of American medicine with a series of little-known anecdotes that bring to life the grand and unceasing struggle by physicians to shed unsound, if venerated, beliefs and practices and adopt new medicines and treatments, often in the face of controversy and scorn. Rutkow expertly weaves the stories of individual doctors—what they believed and how they practiced—with the economic, political, and social issues facing the nation. Among the book’s many historical personages are Cotton Mather, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington (whose timely adoption of a controversial medical practice probably saved the Continental Army), Benjamin Rush, James Garfield (who was killed by his doctors, not by an assassin’s bullet), and Joseph Lister. The book touches such diverse topics as smallpox and the Revolutionary War, the establishment of the first medical schools, medicine during the Civil War, railroad medicine and the beginnings of specialization, the rise of the medical-industrial complex, and the thrilling yet costly advent of modern disease-curing technologies utterly unimaginable a generation ago, such as gene therapies, body scanners, and robotic surgeries. In our time of spirited national debate over the future of American health care amid a seemingly infinite flow of new medical disc

The Energy Cure

The Energy Cure

$11.98

If the terms "spread too thin," "drained," and "strung out" sound familiar, it is because they accurately describe the chronic energy deficiency that many people experience today. The demands of a fast-paced world often pull our energy in multiple directions, leaving us depleted and overwhelmed. Gulping down Red Bull or relying on adrenalin for energy is not a long term solution but is being treated as such, thus causing many stress-related illnesses. In The Energy Cure, psychotherapist and energy coach Kimberly Kingsley introduces personal energy management–a way to live life to its fullest while preserving and renewing your most precious resource. Learning to harness and manage your personal energy can elevate you from survival mode to a place where you grow and thrive. As a guide to personal energy management, this book teaches you to: *Increase resilience against daily challenges by cultivating an energy buffer.*Use the language of energy for making everyday decisions. *Protect yourself from "drains" that exist in every sphere of life.*Become free from self-defeating thoughts and behaviors that deplete energy. We often ignore the most subtle signs of energy deficiency–excessive hunger, irritability, and even boredom. These signs indicate that it is time to plug into your internal source of energy and become charged from within. Instead, we often mistakenly over-consume as a way to energize. This strategy provides short bursts of energy followed by a lull, taking us to ever lower energy levels. This perpetual chase of energy from outside sources keeps us drained. But you can reverse this downward cycle and have the life of your dreams. With The Energy Cure, you’ll see how to make life-enhancing choices, not life-depleting ones, every moment of every day.

“That’s what the criminal law is: it’s how the day tries to correct the night’s mistakes. Most of my cases, people have done something they never would’ve dreamed of doing in broad daylight.”“What does that make us?” I said. “The night’s janitors?”“We’re absolutely that,” Myra said, sipping her cosmo. “What else do we do but clean up after it? That’s why we’ll never run out of work. Not unless someone invents a cure for night. In Brooklyn’s criminal courts, justice often depends on who has the better story to tell. After a drug-related scandal ejects Joel Deveraux from his job at a white-shoe law firm, he slides down the corporate ladder to the Public Defenders’ office in Brooklyn, where he defends the innocent and the guilty alike, a cog in the great clanking machine that is the New York City justice system. When his boss offers him the second chair to the savvy Myra Goldstein in a high-profile murder case, he eagerly takes it. The defendant is Lorenzo Tate, a black pot dealer from the projects who is charged with the murder of a white college student in a street shooting; and the tabloids have sunk their teeth into the racially tinged trial. In this twisty and overwhelmingly authentic journey through the real Brooklyn, Justin Peacock paints a portrait of the law as a form of combat where the best story wins—but who’s telling the truth and who’s lying are matters of interpretation. And of life and death. This compelling debut novel announces Justin Peacock as a writer who enters the territory of Richard Price and Scott Turow with a fresh new take on urban crime and punishment.

Nature Cure

Nature Cure

$20.98

Early in Nature Cure Richard Mabey returns continually to the swift, who in its spectacular migration may not touch down for well over a year. In Ted Hughes’s phrase, the reappearance of the swifts tells us that "the globe’s still working." When we encounter the author in the opening pages of this powerful memoir, his corner of the globe is decidedly not working. A deep depression has left him alienated from his work and his family, financially insecure, and has cost him the Chiltern home in which he has lived his entire life. The open flatlands of his new home in East Anglia–an area now dominated by agriculture, and once so desolate that it harbored an inland lighthouse–could not be more different from the dense Chiltern woods he is leaving behind. Mabey wonders frankly if this move is a crucial part of his becoming, finally, a true adult, or if it is just the latest step in the wrong direction his life has mysteriously taken. Mabey fears that he, like the swift, may be too specialized–given to an intensely specific way of life which, when threatened, leaves him with nowhere to turn. A life spent observing nature has taught him that any creature, even an entire species, might be made suddenly obsolete by the shifts of the world. Just how adaptable is he? He leaves the Chilterns with a near-complete set of the works of John Clare and an antique microscope, but without a frying pan. From now on he will have to think about a complete life, not just those bases he touched as a writer following his calling. It is through this escape to another life, this "flitting," that his healing begins, in often unexpected ways. Mabey’s despair stems from an inability to connect with his writing and with the nature that inspires it; the book’s power lies in the way he relates this distance from nature to a larger problem in modern life–and in the remarkable process by which his reengagement with nature leads Mabey out of his depression and back to passion and wonder.

The Cardiovascular Cure

The Cardiovascular Cure

$9.48

The Cardiovascular Cure offers a groundbreaking approach to preventing heart attack and stroke by enhancing your body’s own natural defenses. Dr. John Cooke, head of Stanford Medical School’s vascular unit, has devised a powerful new method for fighting cardiovascular disease without bypass surgery or angioplasty. Drawing on his own investigations, as well as Nobel Prize-winning research from a team of American scientists, Dr. Cooke provides heart patients with a diet, supplement, and exercise program that will help them feel better in as little as two weeks. His program also works to prevent heart disease in those at risk.In 1998, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for the discovery of EDRF (endothelium-derived relaxing factor), a chemical produced in the lining of the blood vessels, which keeps them free of plaque. Dr. Cooke and other investigators have found that specific nutrients can enhance EDRF production and improve blood flow in people with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other risk factors for heart disease. This potentially life-saving book shows how anyone can achieve healthier blood vessels (the key to preventing heart disease). A two-week menu plan contains recipes that emphasize EDRF-enhancing foods, and there is detailed information on supplemental nutrients and vitamins that are useful in strengthening the cardiovascular system. Recipes from breakfast (Banana Date-Nut Bread; Blueberry Oat Pancakes; Pineapple Ginger or Tropical Smoothies; Pumpkin Muffins) to dinner (Moroccan Red Snapper; Chicken Wrap with Refried Beans; Soy-Glazed Salmon; Turkey Meatloaf) feature healthy fats found in fish, nuts, and olive oil. There is also welcome news that red wine and chocolate can be good for you (there are recipes for Double Chocolate Cake and Chocolate Raspberry Surprise). The exercise program consists of the same therapeutic plans Dr. Cooke has prescribed for even his most severely ill patients, many of whom begin to walk and even exercise more vigorously without pain after two weeks. In addition, there are aerobic workouts designed for more active patients. Dr. Cooke also provides state-of-the-art information (pro and con) on conventional drugs–from aspirin to beta blockers–and medical tests and procedures to further combat cardiovascular disease. With an introduction by Sir John Vane, a Nobel Prize-winning cardiovascular scientist, this book will provide anyone concerned about his or her cardiovascular health with new hope for a pain-free, disease-free life. From the Hardcover edition.
